This essential safety training addresses slips, trips, and falls—the second leading cause of workplace fatalities and a leading cause of injuries across all industries. Workers in manufacturing, warehousing, retail, healthcare, construction, and office environments will learn to recognize fall hazards and implement preventive measures to protect themselves and coworkers. Participants will learn the differences between slip hazards (loss of traction), trip hazards (unexpected changes in walking surface), and fall hazards (elevation changes or unprotected edges). The course covers common causes including wet or contaminated floors, uneven surfaces, poor lighting, clutter and obstacles in walkways, improper footwear, rushing or inattention, and weather conditions like ice and snow. Topics include proper housekeeping practices and maintaining clear walkways, using appropriate floor treatments and non-slip surfaces, ensuring adequate lighting in work areas, selecting proper footwear with slip-resistant soles, using handrails on stairs and ramps, reporting and marking hazards immediately, safe material handling to maintain visibility and balance, fall protection requirements for elevated work, proper use of ladders and steptools, and OSHA's walking-working surface standards (29 CFR 1910 Subpart D). This training emphasizes that most slips, trips, and falls are preventable through awareness, good housekeeping, proper footwear, and taking time to walk safely rather than rushing.
In practical terms, slips, trips, and falls account for about 25% of all US work-related injuries.
The six factors are housekeeping, lighting, walking surfaces, stairs and ladders, material handling and footwear.
Learners are taught that good housekeeping practices, including securing mats, cleaning up spills immediately, placing warning signs in wet areas, and keeping walkways clear of obstructions, help prevent slips, trips, and falls.
To prevent falls when using a ladder, inspect the ladder for damage before use. Make sure to maintain three points of contact. Ensure the ladder is placed on a level, non-slip surface. Also, use cones to signal work in high-traffic areas.
Proper footwear offers adequate traction and support. Slip-resistant shoes with the correct tread design and material are crucial for preventing accidents in different work environments.
