Learn to prevent and control TB in the workplace with OSHA and CDC guidelines, ensuring a safe environment for all.

This comprehensive training prepares healthcare workers, laboratory personnel, correctional facility staff, and other at-risk employees to prevent and control tuberculosis (TB) transmission in workplace settings. The program covers OSHA and CDC guidelines for identifying TB risks, implementing infection control measures, and protecting workers from this serious airborne disease. Participants will learn to recognize environments and job activities that pose TB exposure risks including healthcare facilities, shelters, correctional institutions, and settings serving high-risk populations. The course explains how TB spreads through airborne droplet nuclei, the difference between latent TB infection and active TB disease, and why certain workers face elevated exposure risks. Topics include implementing engineering controls such as negative pressure isolation rooms, HEPA filtration, and ultraviolet germicidal irradiation (UVGI), selecting and properly using respiratory protection including N95 respirators and PAPRs, conducting TB risk assessments and developing exposure control plans, screening and testing protocols for employees, isolation procedures for suspected or confirmed TB cases, following CDC's hierarchy of TB infection control measures, recognizing signs and symptoms of active TB disease, post-exposure protocols and medical evaluation, and compliance with OSHA's Respiratory Protection Standard (29 CFR 1910.134). This training emphasizes that TB remains a serious occupational health threat and that layered infection control measures—combining engineering controls, administrative procedures, and personal protective equipment—are essential for protecting healthcare and other at-risk workers.
Tuberculosis (TB) is an infectious disease caused by the bacterium Mycobacterium tuberculosis. It primarily affects the lungs but can also impact other parts of the body including the kidneys, spine, and brain. TB is transmitted through the air when a person with active TB disease of the lungs or throat coughs, sneezes, speaks, or sings, releasing tiny droplets containing the bacteria. People nearby can inhale these droplets and become infected.
The key symptoms of active TB disease cover a persistent cough lasting three weeks or longer, chest pain, coughing up blood or sputum, fatigue, weight loss, fever, and night sweats. If you experience these symptoms, it is important to seek medical attention for proper diagnosis and treatment.
Learners are taught that workplaces can prevent and control TB exposure by implementing several key strategies including conducting regular risk assessments to recognize possible TB exposure risks, utilizing engineering controls including proper ventilation and negative pressure rooms, providing personal protective equipment (PPE) like N95 respirators for employees, ensuring regular TB screening and testing for employees, especially in high-risk environments and educating and training employees on TB prevention, symptoms, and proper use of PPE.
The standard treatment for active TB disease involves a combination of antibiotics taken over a period of 6 to 9 months. The most commonly used drugs are isoniazid, rifampin, ethambutol, and pyrazinamide. It is crucial for patients to complete the full course of treatment to ensure the disease is fully eradicated and to prevent the development of drug-resistant TB.
OSHA and CDC guidelines give comprehensive frameworks for preventing and controlling TB in various settings. OSHA's guidelines focus on workplace safety, including standards for respiratory protection (29 CFR 1910.134) and personal protective equipment (PPE) (29 CFR 1910.132). The CDC offers guidelines on TB screening, testing, treatment, and public health management. Together, these guidelines help ensure a coordinated and effective approach to TB prevention and control.
