Prepare workers who may enter IDLH atmospheres to know the parts of an SCBA, don and doff the unit correctly and control their breathing.

This essential respiratory protection training program covers the proper selection, use, inspection, and maintenance of Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA)—critical life-safety equipment used by workers who must enter Immediately Dangerous to Life or Health (IDLH) atmospheres. IDLH environments pose immediate threats from oxygen deficiency, toxic gases, chemical vapors, smoke, or other contaminants that could cause death, immediate irreversible health effects, or impair a worker's ability to escape. Firefighters, emergency responders, hazmat technicians, confined space rescue teams, and industrial workers will learn the three main components of SCBA systems: the high-pressure compressed air tank (typically 2,216 psi or 4,500 psi), the pressure regulator that reduces tank pressure to breathable levels and delivers air on demand, and the inhalation connection (full facepiece mask) that creates an airtight seal to deliver clean breathing air while preventing contaminated atmosphere from entering. The training covers proper donning and doffing procedures to ensure correct equipment assembly and facepiece seal before entering hazardous atmospheres. Participants will learn pre-use inspection requirements including pressure gauge readings, low-air alarms, regulator function, facepiece condition, and strap adjustment. The course addresses proper breathing techniques to conserve air supply, monitoring remaining air pressure, buddy system protocols, and emergency procedures when air supply runs low or equipment malfunctions. Additional topics include SCBA maintenance and cleaning procedures, storage requirements to prevent damage and contamination, fit testing requirements for different facepiece sizes, medical evaluation and clearance for SCBA use, and regulatory compliance with OSHA's respiratory protection standard (29 CFR 1910.134). This comprehensive training ensures workers can safely don, operate, and maintain SCBA equipment in emergency situations where their lives depend on this critical respiratory protection.
SCBA training is needed by anyone who may wear a self-contained breathing apparatus in an atmosphere immediately dangerous to life or health. That includes firefighters, hazmat technicians, confined space rescue teams, industrial emergency responders, and workers entering oxygen-deficient or toxic areas. The 13-minute video is available in English.
SCBA use falls under OSHA's respiratory protection standard, 29 CFR 1910.134. Employers must provide medical evaluation, fit testing, and training before use, and retrain at least annually. For IDLH atmospheres, the standard requires a full facepiece pressure-demand SCBA or a supplied-air respirator with an auxiliary self-contained air supply.
An SCBA has three main parts: a high-pressure air cylinder, a regulator, and a full facepiece, mounted on a backpack frame. The cylinder typically holds air at 2,216 or 4,500 psi. The regulator reduces that pressure and delivers air on demand, while the facepiece seals out the surrounding atmosphere.
An SCBA kept for emergency use must be inspected at least monthly under 29 CFR 1910.134, as well as before and after each use. Checks cover cylinder pressure, regulator and alarm function, facepiece, straps, and valves. Cylinders must be recharged when pressure falls to 90 percent of the manufacturer's recommended level.
When an SCBA low-air alarm sounds, stop work and leave the hazardous atmosphere immediately with your partner. The alarm means you are using reserve air intended for escape. Breathe steadily to conserve air, and keep the facepiece on until you reach clean air.
