Propane safety training is for forklift operators and other vehicle operators who refuel or exchange propane cylinders. It also suits maintenance, warehouse and facility staff who handle propane tanks or dispensing equipment. Anyone working near propane storage areas should also understand how propane behaves and what to do if they smell gas.
OSHA's liquefied petroleum gas standard, 29 CFR 1910.110, covers propane storage, handling, containers and dispensing in general industry. Propane-powered forklifts are also subject to the powered industrial truck standard, 29 CFR 1910.178. Many fire codes adopt NFPA 58, the Liquefied Petroleum Gas Code, for additional propane requirements.
Propane is dangerous because it is stored as a liquid under pressure and expands into a highly flammable vapor when released. Propane vapor is heavier than air, so it settles in low spots such as pits, drains and basements. Liquid propane can also cause frostbite-like cold burns on bare skin.
If you smell propane, stop work, put out any flames, and do not operate switches, phones or engines nearby. Shut off the cylinder or tank valve if that is safe, leave the area, and report the leak from a safe distance. Propane has an added odorant that smells like rotten eggs.
Refuel propane forklift cylinders outdoors or in an approved area, with the engine off and away from ignition sources. Wear gloves and eye protection, check the cylinder and fittings for damage, and never overfill. Store spare cylinders in a secure rack away from exits. The 12-minute propane video is available in English.
