Make workplace requirements clearer with MEWPs: Safe Operation of Aerial Lifts training focused on MEWP types, operating hazards, and practical risk controls.

MEWPs: Safe Operation of Aerial Lifts prepares employees to recognize relevant risks, responsibilities, and safe work expectations. Key outcomes include the ability to spot different types of MEWPs and their unique hazards, describe conduct thorough job site risk assessments and equipment inspections, and operate MEWPs safely and effectively per ANSI/SAIA A92.22. The material also helps learners maintain situational awareness and communicate clearly with teams. Practical examples connect the subject to routine tasks, expected procedures, and decisions employees may need to make on the job. Learners finish with a clearer understanding of what to look for, how to respond, and when to raise a concern or seek additional guidance.
MEWP training is needed for anyone who operates a scissor lift, boom lift or other mobile elevating work platform. Supervisors, project managers and safety professionals who plan or oversee elevated work also benefit, since they are responsible for site risk assessments, equipment selection and making sure operators follow safe practices.
The ANSI/SAIA A92.22 standard covers safe use of mobile elevating work platforms, and A92.24 covers MEWP training. OSHA also regulates aerial lifts, including 29 CFR 1926.453 in construction and 29 CFR 1910.67 for vehicle-mounted platforms in general industry, and employers must train workers on the equipment they use.
Group A MEWPs keep the center of the platform inside the machine's tipping lines in every position, which is typical of scissor lifts. Group B MEWPs, such as boom lifts, can reach out beyond the tipping lines, so they carry greater tip-over risk and call for personal fall protection for occupants.
The MEWP type number tells you how the machine can be driven. A Type 1 machine moves only when the platform is fully lowered. Type 2 machines can move while raised, but the driving controls sit on the chassis. Type 3 machines can move while raised with controls on the platform itself.
The main MEWP hazards are falls from the platform, tip-overs, contact with overhead power lines and structures, falling objects, and being caught between the platform and nearby objects. Ground conditions such as slopes, holes and soft soil add tip-over risk, which is why site risk assessments and pre-use inspections matter.
