Hexavalent Chromium Employee

Focused on real-world application, Hexavalent Chromium Employee turns core concepts into clear actions learners can use at work. Key outcomes include the ability to create awareness on Hexavalent Chromium risks, train safe handling and control measures, and support the right PPE. The material also helps learners implement ventilation & controls. Practical examples connect the subject to routine tasks, expected procedures, and decisions employees may need to make on the job. Learners finish with a clearer understanding of what to look for, how to respond, and when to raise a concern or seek additional guidance.

Course Overview

  • Identify common industrial uses of hexavalent chromium, such as plating and pigments
  • Describe the health effects of exposure to hexavalent chromium compounds
  • Explain the engineering and work practice controls that limit exposure
  • Use respirators, protective clothing and equipment as the program requires
  • Follow proper housekeeping practices in areas where chromates are used
  • Respond correctly to an exposure and take part in medical surveillance

FAQs

Who needs hexavalent chromium training?

Hexavalent chromium training is needed by workers exposed to chromium(VI) compounds. Common jobs include chrome electroplating, welding and cutting stainless steel, and applying or sanding chromate paints and coatings. Making chromate pigments for dyes, inks and plastics also qualifies. The 17-minute English video covers controls, PPE, medical surveillance and exposure response.

Which OSHA standard covers hexavalent chromium?

OSHA regulates hexavalent chromium under 29 CFR 1910.1026 for general industry, 1915.1026 for shipyards and 1926.1126 for construction. These standards set exposure limits and require exposure assessment, engineering controls, respiratory protection, protective clothing, hygiene areas, housekeeping, medical surveillance and worker training.

What is the OSHA exposure limit for hexavalent chromium?

OSHA's permissible exposure limit for hexavalent chromium is 5 micrograms per cubic meter of air as an 8-hour time-weighted average. The action level is 2.5 micrograms per cubic meter. Reaching the action level triggers periodic monitoring, and exceeding the limit requires controls and respirators.

What are the health effects of hexavalent chromium exposure?

Inhaling hexavalent chromium over time can cause lung cancer. Exposure also irritates and damages the nose, throat and lungs, can perforate the nasal septum, and causes skin ulcers and allergic dermatitis. Eye contact can cause serious damage, and some workers develop asthma.

How do you control hexavalent chromium exposure?

Hexavalent chromium exposure is controlled first with engineering controls such as local exhaust ventilation, fume extraction and chromium-free substitutes. Work practices like wet methods and HEPA vacuuming prevent dust buildup. Respirators, gloves and coveralls cover remaining exposure, and workers should wash their hands and face before eating.
