FAQs

Who should take diabetes prevention training?

Diabetes prevention training suits any employee interested in long-term health. It is especially relevant for people with prediabetes, a family history of diabetes, excess weight or an inactive lifestyle. It fits well within a workplace wellness program. The 12-minute video, produced in 2025, is available in English.

What is prediabetes?

Prediabetes means blood sugar levels are higher than normal but not yet high enough for a type 2 diabetes diagnosis. Many people with prediabetes don't know they have it. The condition raises the risk of type 2 diabetes, heart disease and stroke, but lifestyle changes can often reverse it.

What are the main risk factors for type 2 diabetes?

The main risk factors for type 2 diabetes include being overweight, physical inactivity, a family history of diabetes, older age and having prediabetes. Insulin resistance, often linked to excess weight, is the underlying problem. Some racial and ethnic groups face higher risk, as do women who had gestational diabetes.

Can type 2 diabetes be prevented?

In many cases, yes. Type 2 diabetes can often be prevented or delayed through modest weight loss, regular physical activity and a balanced diet with sensible portions. Managing stress and getting enough sleep also help. People with risk factors should ask a health care provider about blood sugar screening.

How does insulin resistance lead to type 2 diabetes?

Insulin resistance occurs when muscle, fat and liver cells stop responding well to insulin, the hormone that moves sugar from the blood into cells. The pancreas makes extra insulin to compensate. Over time it can't keep up, blood sugar rises, and prediabetes or type 2 diabetes develops.
