This comprehensive training prepares healthcare workers, laboratory personnel, correctional facility staff, and other at-risk employees to prevent and control tuberculosis (TB) transmission in workplace settings. The program covers OSHA and CDC guidelines for identifying TB risks, implementing infection control measures, and protecting workers from this serious airborne disease. Participants will learn to recognize environments and job activities that pose TB exposure risks including healthcare facilities, shelters, correctional institutions, and settings serving high-risk populations. The course explains how TB spreads through airborne droplet nuclei, the difference between latent TB infection and active TB disease, and why certain workers face elevated exposure risks. Topics include implementing engineering controls such as negative pressure isolation rooms, HEPA filtration, and ultraviolet germicidal irradiation (UVGI), selecting and properly using respiratory protection including N95 respirators and PAPRs, conducting TB risk assessments and developing exposure control plans, screening and testing protocols for employees, isolation procedures for suspected or confirmed TB cases, following CDC's hierarchy of TB infection control measures, recognizing signs and symptoms of active TB disease, post-exposure protocols and medical evaluation, and compliance with OSHA's Respiratory Protection Standard (29 CFR 1910.134). This training emphasizes that TB remains a serious occupational health threat and that layered infection control measures—combining engineering controls, administrative procedures, and personal protective equipment—are essential for protecting healthcare and other at-risk workers.
