This critical safety training prepares construction and industrial workers to recognize and protect against respirable crystalline silica dust exposure—a serious occupational hazard that causes silicosis, lung cancer, and other fatal diseases. The program covers OSHA's Silica Standard (29 CFR 1926.1153 for construction and 1910.1053 for general industry) and explains why controlling silica exposure is essential for long-term health. Participants will learn where silica hazards occur including cutting, grinding, drilling, or breaking concrete, brick, block, or stone, sandblasting and abrasive blasting operations, jackhammering and chipping, rock drilling and crushing, and demolition work. The course explains how microscopic silica particles, when inhaled over time, cause irreversible lung scarring (silicosis) that can lead to disability and death. Topics include OSHA's permissible exposure limit (PEL) for silica and air monitoring requirements, engineering controls such as water suppression, local exhaust ventilation, and dust collection systems, work practice controls including wet methods and good housekeeping, respiratory protection requirements when controls cannot sufficiently reduce exposure, medical surveillance and lung function testing for exposed workers, written exposure control plans and employee training requirements, using OSHA's Table 1 to identify required control methods for common tasks, and recognizing symptoms of silica-related diseases. This training emphasizes that silica exposure is preventable through proper controls and that early detection through medical monitoring is critical since silicosis has no cure.
